Since Denny had business in El Paso, we decided to take a West Texas road trip—Yes, I do get out of the Texas Hill Country every once and awhile.  It just so happened, we could time it to coincide with the Garrison Brothers fundraiser for Balmorhea at The Gage Hotel in Marathon.  The event was touted as one in a series of progressive pool parties at Texas’ most legendary hotels to raise money for the beautification and preservation of Balmorhea State Park—a place where I have fond memories from my youth.  In the sixties, my older sister needed a special college credit and it just so happened that course was offered at Sul Ross College (now University).  So, my Mother rented a house in Alpine for one glorious summer during which we ventured out to Big Bend, Marfa, Fort Davis, and an amazing spring fed outdoor swimming pool called Balmorhea (pronounced Bal-more-ay).  It’s always on any Texas bucket list, but, as of now it is closed because of much needed repair.  Enter Dan and Nancy Garrison, who also have fond memories of the world’s largest spring fed swimming pool.  And, they just happened to have a bourbon called Balmorhea.  For this article, I’m going to concentrate on the fundraiser and leave the hotel for another blog as it deserves mucho attention.  Alpha-dog personality, Dan, held everyone’s attention with fun and interesting insights about bourbon, politics, and his very interesting background.  The room was filled with Garrison Brothers groupies— I’ve never seen such enthusiastic embibbers.  In fact, Denny and I decided it was a like a tent revival, almost cultlike—you know, kinda like Aggies! (For those of you readers outside of Texas, Aggies are students at a little ol’ college in College Station, Texas).  Anyway, back to the spirit filled evening.  It was a very special night in the big sky part of Texas.  By the way, you can hop on the band wagon and enjoy an evening just like this one because future events are being planned to raise dollars for Balmorhea, as we speak, in Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, and Fort Worth.  Keep checking on the Garrison Brothers web page for future information.
