BACK TO BLACK

Black Board Bar B Q, in Sisterdale, is definitely destination eating.  Unless Sisterdale is on your beaten path or you’re into beautiful Hill Country scenic drives, you’d probably never go there.  Friends had raved about it as did Texas Monthly (June 2018).  So, Denny and I decided to take the hour long drive through Johnson City, Blanco then Kendalia and see what all the buzz was about.  We got there a little past noon and were the first ones through the gate, obviously, the first customers of the day.  We were greeted by Tres who gave us the culinary crash course of the menu and it quickly became very apparent we had stepped through the looking glass of bar-b-q joints.  You could really see the owners previous food experiences coming through with such things as Wagyu brisket and Asian Slaw.  The room still hints of a western homage with country western artists, past and present, on the walls.  Gone are the crowded, backless benches usually found in bar-b-q joints. Instead, Black Board Bar B Q has nice tables with sturdy bistro chairs so you can lean back and savor the official, national meal of Texas. (BTW, there are tons of picnic tables outside for sipping a craft beer and watching the kiddies romp around.) Because we were the first, we were able to visit with Jo who gave us a brief background of how she and Jake wound up there and thanked us for coming.  In just a short amount of time, more people started coming in and we were glad to have gotten there before the rush.  When we left, we decided to go back toward Comfort and Luckenbach and oh, what a beautiful drive—even in the middle of dead winter.  Parts of the road hits elevations of 1900ft—-truly, the hill country and what a great road trip on your little Harley!  We zig-zagged back to Highway 290 and made our way home past countless wineries and new breweries.  Yes, even in the most monochromatic time of the year, the beauty of the Texas Hill Country shines through…………….And, we get to live here!
