IF I WOULD’VE GONE TO AUSTIN……

I think I mentioned my neighbor, Teresa, and I were going to Austin to see the GONE WITH THE WIND exhibit

at the Ransom last week until we remembered it was the first weekend of ACL.  So, instead of turning on Hwy 71, we just kept going on 281.  Thanks goodness I remembered because not only was it ACL, but it was the Texas-Baylor game and downtown would have been just holy hell.  And what a shame.  I’m overdue on an Austin run.  Even tho it’s only about a 45 minute drive, sometimes Austin can be very far away.  I’m now down to going when I run out of freshly squeezed orange juice that I get from HEB on Bee Caves (I used to get it at

Whole Foods but I’ve discovered it’s much cheaper at HEB).  I also make a run when I’m out of olive oil and vinegar.  I’m addicted to the original vinegar at Con’ Olio.  I can drink the stuff.  But I digress…..I keep a file of things I want to do in Austin and periodically take a day to do a field trip.  Here’s my current hit list.

1. Gone With The Wind Exhibit (already covered)

2. Have a pastry from the new bakery, St. Philip’s

3. Wash it down with coffee from one of several java houses

4. Check out some new shops in East Austin.

This to do list does not allow time to take in a flick with my pal, Susie, at my favorite film house The Violet Crown. That’s a trip in itself.  And, there’s probably no time to swing by and see my friend, David Bull, who is Austin’s primo chef at Congress.  No, this is a check off list to keep my thumb in the Austin pie.  But the best thing about the day is after I check all the boxes, I boomerang back down the road where I’m out of the traffic and crowds.  It’s good to have the best of both worlds.  And BTW, we wound up in Fredericksburg and had lunch at The Herb Farm.  What a great “plan B”.  Life is good.  Really, really good.

My favorite place to eat in Fredericksburg---The Herb Farm.
