REMEMBER THE ALAMO

Cover burger with 1/2 & 1/2 side

As in Alamo Springs Cafe.  You probably remember it’s burger on the Texas Monthly cover a few years ago.  The burger got so popular, when you go, all you have to say is “the cover burger” and they will bring a gastronomical dream on a plate.  And for a side, order the split—half fries and half onion rings. We were there with our friends, Cheryl and Billy, and timed it just right, as in, 4:30-between the lunch and dinner rush.  Our drive over was a zig-zag through the ever beautiful central Texas hill country.  We had just had a 4 inch rain, so the landscape was green and lush.  We drove by old rock houses, well over a hundred years old, German immigrants had wisely built when they chose some of the best land that Texas had to offer (in my opinion, it still is!)-way past the pop-up wineries that are sucking up Hwy 290 like a fire sale.  No matter, the drive is worth it, uh, the hamburgers are reeeeely worth it.  When you finally get there, you pull into a gravel parking lot and walk past the outside dining and band stage.  Yes, there were people eating outside, but, by the time you read this the Texas heat will probably convince you to bee line it inside.  You’ll go claim your table (I recommend in the main seating area) and choose you beer out of the big cooler.  While we were waiting on our order, Mike (the owner) who is a friend of Billy and Cheryl’s came over and visited.  I always appreciate the restaurant owner or chef who graciously talks to you like they don’t have anything else in the world to do………….Anyway, put Alamo Springs Cafe on you Texas hill country bucket list–especially you foreigners from the likes of far away places like Europe, California, or New York.  It’s the real deal.  Whoever said “build it and they will come” had to have been thinking of ASC!

Oh!!!!! Come for the burgers and stay for the bats!  You’ll see what I mean when you see the picture!  Attention: Mike…that needs to be you next teeshirt logo!
